Huon Valley Food and Wine Tour

Izzy the Bus - Back in Action!

We are back from overseas and Izzy the Bus is all ready to get back on the road. Our first tour of the season is our popular Huon Valley Food and Wine tour. It is offered as a special day tour for Scenic Tours passengers who are here for an extended tour of Tassie and you can join us if you’d like to explore the beautiful Huon region, with its history, wine, gourmet food, beer, cider, honey and other local produce.

We start the tour with some sights of Hobart city, and then follow the “Princess Mary route” along the Channel Highway, with spectacular views along the Derwent River. We stop at the Margate Train for a delicious morning tea/coffee with freshly-made scones and local jam and cream in the original dining car of the historic Tasman Limited train that used to run between Hobart and northern Tasmania. There is time to explore this lovely historic train in a park-like setting with interesting shops on the train, as well as “Mother Wouldn’t Like It” antique and collectible store that is full of an ever-changing inventory of interesting items.

Soon after leaving the train, we get back on Izzy the Bus for a short drive to the outstanding Channel Heritage Centre for a walk back in time. I love listening to the conversations at this place, as guests reminisce about memories from long (and not so long) ago!

We leave Margate and head towards Huonville, but not before stopping at the beautiful little Nandroya vineyard for a private tasting of their Savignon Blanc and Pinot wines, and expansive views over their vineyard towards kunanyi/Mt Wellington and Northwest Bay.

In Huonville, we taste local honey, check out some locally made crafts and gifts, and drive past the dark waters of the Huon River before heading to the Apple Shed home of the iconic Willie Smith’s Cider where we enjoy a gourmet lunch platter. There is also a chance to taste their organic cider and explore the Apple Museum, showcasing the history of an industry that is so integral to the Huon valley.
